This shoot was supposed to be something different than the rest. I tried more urban landscapes to show the contrast between fantasy and real like and how they can intertwine.
I first shot on the side of the road, sitting on a path. You can see wire fences behind me, giving an industrial look while also showing perhaps captivity.
There's bushes and hedges around the character i'm portraying to give her some familiarity and something to interact with. This relationship between her and nature shows that contrast between humans and their relationship with material things that destroy nature instead of cherishing it.
This is the only image from this part of the shoot that I don't mind. Most of these images just don't feel right because they're not at ethereal and mysterious as I would have hoped. The images are far more open than the others.
Ths image still isn't a success but I like the pose and her connection with nature, as well as the car lights illuminating her hair to an unnatural colour, which shows the industrial side of people and the contrast between the two,
I then tried taking images in front of a billboard, but again these just didn't work with my project concept. While demonstrating this contrast between the ethereal and the real, it really doesn't have a strong message or link to the project.
the 'Say goodbye to buying' doesn't really have a big enough link with my work to make it relevant.
This image appears as if the character is ready to get run over by a car. The billboard has much more contextual relevance in this image because of the link with the car and the advertisement, but still not that relevant between the character and the advertisement.
She stands confident with her arms up to show no fear, which would make sense because she's on the path and the car is on the road. This is almost like an illusion, or perhaps a fantasy or dream in a very dark way.
I then went and decided to take photographs of me in the nearby trees. There's still that element of industrial and human presence due to the wire fences and the building behind her, but this has a much more fantasy and ethereal feeling that i was initially going for. There's that sense of mystery caused by her hiding behind these trees, and we can imagine that this is a place where people visit often due to the fences and the building - it's not so isolated as the woods in my previous shoots, and so we wonder what she's doing there and what she's hiding from. Perhaps normal people and everyday life. Normal responsibilities. She seems to embrace her otherworldly self in this not so otherworldly location.
There's twigs and thorns all around her, making the location clearly not the most comfortable to be in which creates a sense of discomfort for the viewer as well as emphasising the mystery that surrounds this character.
In this image in particular, the character doesn't seem bothered about the environment and is just embracing herself.
This image is very similar in facial expressions but her arms make it appear that instead of embracing herself she's embracing nature. Her face is clear and seems less worried about hiding her identity at this moment of embrace than in previous images from other shoots. I wouldn't usually be into this however i think that the way that she is unbothered by anybody that's watching her, including the viewer, because of her relationship with nature really works.
This image overall shows finding peace in your environment and finding and focussing on the nice aspects of the world rather than the less desirable parts.
This image has a far less positive feeling to it. The character i am portraying doesn't seem so confident or graceful, she's keeping herself to herself and hiding herself behind the tree rather than appearing to be breaking through the branches that block her from view.
She looks down, a sign of insecurity and negative moods. She seems distant and not quite focussed, her eyes only just missing the camera but still not bothered by it.
The way she grips on to this tree shows need for security and comfort.
The space around her makes the image have a sense of isolation, yet the building and the fence behind her suggest she's closer to other people than it seems.
This image appears more delicate and elegant than the previous image due to the angle that her face is at. It shows a more conventional beauty, as well as her gestures appearing slightly softer.
She again sues the tree for comfort and cover, but this time she looks into the camera, as if hiding from the viewer, a stranger to this character even if they're not a stranger to me as the artist.
Her dress is used as camouflage unsuccessfully, for she is too pale and her hair too red to blend in to her surroundings.
The thorns that surround her environment now act as a barrier between her and the viewer, as if they're protecting her too.
This image has a completely different mood. It seems more suspicious and as if the character is on edge, scared perhaps. She tilts her head and checks nobody is there. It looks as if maybe she's hiding something in the trees, but what, we will never know. The mystery of this image is strong because of this, her identity and her whereabouts and her actions are a mystery to the viewer.
What we can understand however, is her feelings and body language. This tense feeling is a reflection of my own life and brain; always on edge and worried, always feeling alone but scared of that isolation.
This image is also much about hiding herself into her environment. She tried to blend in but she has too many differences with this environment to do so successfully. She doesn't want to be seen or looked at but the fact her hiding is so obvious makes us want to look more.
This shows the way I hate attention, people looking at me, and how I always feel judged. It's so much easier to blend in and hide away. She's not hiding herself completely, however, which contradicts this and is a huge part of my own life. While I don't want to be looked at and judged i also need attention. This is shown by her showing herself partly. The way she looks down breaks any potential connected between the audience and herself. It's as if she doesn't know what she wants, which is an exact representation of my own world.
Overall, this image was both unsuccessful and successful; the first two parts of this didn't work and I don't feel like it fits well enough with my project. The last part however I think was really successful and is a nice link and also contrast to the previous shoots in terms of their location due to the manmade aspects we can see.
